Chrysler has been dubbed a hybrid Björk-Faithfull entity, a superior wizard of the Theremin. An Austrian-born, New York-based composer and musician, she is mostly known for her use of the instrument you don’t actually touch, but automatically think of the Twilight Zone when you hear it. – Noisey
Dorit Chrysler has been dubbed a superior wizard of the theremin. An Austrian-born, New York based composer, producer and singer. Chrysler is the co-founder of the NY Theremin Society and founder of the first school for theremin, Kid CoolTheremin School. As much as the theremin is a tool in Chrysler’s electronic instrument arsenal, she’s also one the most visible thereminists spreading the gospel of this mysterious sounding instrument, which is basically played by massaging thin air.
Making her professional vocal debut at Austria’s Opera House Graz at the age of seven, Dorit went on to form her first new wave band at age thirteen and began working towards her Master’s Degree in Musicolog at eighteen in Vienna. Moving to New York, she was fronting a number of notable bands, including New York’s experimental quartet Halcion before she embarked on her solo career in 2000. She has performed with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra and her music is featured on the HBO documentary “Going Clear”. 2016 marks a performance at CERN and her founding of “Dame Electric”, an Festival edition she curated in New York for the Austrian Cultural Forum. Dorit’s music has been commissioned by the moMA ny, the Venice Biennale, for theater, TV & Film, including Lars van Trier.
Dorit is performing at St. Elisabeth Kirche on Saturday, November 11th, 2017.
